Company Profile

Incorporated in 1990 Can-Cara Development’s main objectives are to identify and invest in international manufacturing and construction opportunity areas, that will ultimately contribute to Jamaica’s Economic and Social development, while providing reasonable returns to its shareholders and long term employment for its employees.

Over the last 14 years Can-Cara has undertaken considerable research into housing construction in an effort to identify suitable and affordable construction systems, which would assist the construction sector to meet the increasing demand for affordable houses.  During this period Can-Cara constructed and donated several demonstration units at The University of Technology (UTECH), in its search to identify the most suitable units for the Jamaican environment, taking into account affordability technical and environmental requirements.

Can-Cara entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Laminar Inc. Of Michigan USA to produce affordable housing units in Jamaica and the Caribbean using Laminar’s Pre-Engineered Construction System.  In Jamaica the System will be called Can-Cara/Laminar.

The Can-Cara/Laminar Building System is the culmination of a development process that has resulted in a large number of patents over the past twenty-seven (27) years. The patented system has been used to construct numerous mid-rise offices, apartments and industrial buildings throughout the Midwest.  Some years ago, however, it was determined that there was a sizeable market for high quality low cost housing around the world.  This led to the development of the patented Can-Cara/Laminar Panel and adoption of the Can-Cara/Laminar Building System to this particular use.

The system utilizes several patented and patent pending processes and products which make the system adaptable to the various world environments.  The advantages of the Can-Cara/Laminar System, make its end products affordable, strong, flexible in design, fully insulated, hazard resistant as well as allow for speedy completion.

Can-Cara is currently developing 744  2 bedroom detached houses at White Water Meadow, St. Catherine Jamaica.  This Development will include a Shopping Centre, an English Style Park and various recreational areas.  The project has six phases, and the final phase is slated for completion in September 2004.

Prior to the completion of Phase 6 of the White Water Meadows Project, slated for the 4th quarter 2004.  Can-Cara  would have completed the Innswood/White Water Meadows Water Supply System.  The Western Spanish Town Sewage Treatment Project is ahead of schedule at 30% of  planned production.  This is the First Private Sector built, owned and operated Sewage Treatment Facility in the  Caricom Region.  Can-Cara Environment is slated to be licensed by the Office of  Utility Regulation before the end of the  First Quarter 2004.

The Portmore Shopping Centre has been  granted Preliminary approval and site activities could commence by the fourth quarter of 2004.  The Silverstone Shopping Centre in St. Catherine is still being  conceptualized.

The Meadows of Irwin in St. James is in its final stages of  Engineering and already a number of the agencies in the approval chain have given their Preliminary approval.  Friendship Estate, also in St. James, is in the concept stage and will be subject to detailed Planning as it will constitute the Caribbean’s largest single development of a multidimentional Suburban  Enclave exclusively  by the Private Sector.
